The Amazonian Savannas of French Guiana: Cultural and Social Importance, Biodiversity, and Conservation Challenges ArchiMer
Stier, Anna; De Carvalho, William D.; Rostain, Stephen; Catzeflis, Francois; Claessens, Olivier; Dewynter, Mael; Mckey, Doyle; Mustin, Karen; Palisse, Marianne; De Thoisy, Benoit.
The Amazonian savannas of French Guiana are rare and of high ecological and cultural value but are also highly threatened. They are socioecological systems that have been coconstructed by humans and nature and today form mosaic landscapes along the country's coast. From pre-Columbian raised fields through colonial and Creole uses to contemporary uses, they have been largely shaped and modified by human activities. They are currently threatened by changes in fire regimes, agricultural practices, invasive species, and infrastructure development. Less than 3% are protected, despite their importance for several endangered animal and plant species. A shift is required in the way we think about their conservation to create a new strategy that would be completely...

The length of the dry season may be associated with leaf scleromorphism in cerrado plants Anais da ABC (AABC)
SOUZA,MARCELO C.; FRANCO,AUGUSTO C.; HARIDASAN,MUNDAYATAN; ROSSATTO,DAVI R.; ARAÚJO,JANAÍNA F. DE; MORELLATO,LEONOR P.C.; HABERMANN,GUSTAVO.
Despite limitations of low fertility and high acidity of the soils, the cerrado flora is the richest amongst savannas. Many cerrado woody species show sclerophyllous leaves, which might be related to the availability of water and nutrients in the soil. To better understand the function and structure of cerrado vegetation within its own variations, we compared two cerrado communities: one in its core region in central Brazil (Brasília, DF) and the other on its southern periphery (Itirapina, SP). We contrasted the length of the dry season, soil fertility rates, leaf concentrations of N, P, K, Ca and Mg and the specific leaf area (SLA) between these communities. The dry season was shorter on the periphery, where the soil was more fertile although more acidic....

The orchid bee fauna (Hymenoptera, Apidae) of a core area of the Cerrado, Brazil: the role of riparian forests as corridors for forest-associated bees Biota Neotropica
Faria,Luiz Roberto Ribeiro; Silveira,Fernando Amaral da.
The composition of local orchid-bee faunas (Hymenoptera, Apidae, Euglossina) in open-vegetation domains is poorly known, making the ecology and biogeography of the group difficult to understand. The aim of this work was to answer the following questions: i) Is the orchid-bee fauna composition, species richness and abundance in the cerrado (Brazilian savanna) sensu stricto similar to that of riparian forests immersed in that domain? ii) Do species from neighboring forest domains use riparian forests as mesic corridors into the Cerrado? Two sites in cerrado s.s. and two in riparian forests were sampled monthly, one day per month, during one year (Nov/2003-Oct/2004) in northwestern Minas Gerais state, Brazil. Six aromatic compounds (β-ionone, 1,8-cineole,...

The vascular flora of the cerrado in Emas National Park (Central Brazil): a savanna flora summarized BABT
Batalha,Marco Antônio; Martins,Fernando Roberto.
The Brazilian cerrado may be divided in two main phytogeographic sectors: one characterized by Piptocarpha rotundifolia, in which the Emas National Park (ENP) is located, and other characterized by Curatella americana. We carried out a floristic survey in ENP, which allowed an assessment of the taxonomic composition, taxa size, and similarity with other sites for the ENP's vascular flora. We compared the ENP's flora with southeastern outlying cerrado sites, also in the Piptocarpha sector, and with general floristic patterns in the cerrado vegetation. The distribution of species per family in ENP was significantly different from that obtained for each component of the general cerrado flora. The herbaceous component was characterized by an overproportion of...

Threats to the Cerrado remnants of the state of São Paulo, Brazil Scientia Agricola
Durigan,Giselda; Siqueira,Marinez Ferreira de; Franco,Geraldo Antonio Daher Correa.
Patches of natural vegetation remaining in landscapes occupied by man are continuously under threat due to the edge effects and also to land use types around these remnants. The most frequent threats and land use types in the vicinity of 81 Cerrado (tropical savanna type) fragments in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, were analyzed in order to verify if the frequency of every type of disturbance to the natural ecosystem depends on the neighboring land use. The hypothesis of the study assumes that environmental threats are correlated with land use around protected areas. From the 81 areas, the most frequent human-induced land cover types around the Cerrado remnants were: pasture (recorded in 78% of the areas), sugarcane plantations (26%), roads (19%), annual...

Treehoppers (Homoptera, Membracidae) in southeastern Brazil: use of host plants Zoologia
Lopes,Benedito C..
A survey on the use of host plants by treehoppers in plants in cerrado (savanna) vegetation at Moji-Guaçu (São Paulo, Southeastern Brazil) was made. Fifty-two species of treehoppers were recorded in association with 40 host plant species from October 1980 to February 1982. The families Araliaceae, Asteraceae, Leguminosae, Malpighiaceae, Myrtaceae and Nyctaginaceae were the most commonly used for oviposition. Byrsonima intermedia A. Juss. (Malpighiaceae) had the highest number of associated treehopper species (10 species). The abundance of treehopper individuals was related to the hot and rainy season (from October to February), while during the cold and dry season (from March to September) there was a decrease in the number of these Homoptera. After the...

Trends and gaps of the scientific literature about the effects of fire on Brazilian Cerrado Biota Neotropica
Arruda,Filipe Viegas de; Sousa,Diego Guimarães de; Teresa,Fabrício Barreto; Prado,Vitor Hugo Mendonça do; Cunha,Hélida Ferreira da; Izzo,Thiago Junqueira.
Abstract Fire management is an important issue in the Brazilian Cerrado, since both anthropogenic high intensity fires and complete fire suppression can reduce the biodiversity in this biome. In this paper, we highlight the trends in scientific literature about fire effects in the Cerrado, aiming to detect possible gaps and to indicate directions of future scientific research. We searched for articles in the periodic database Web of Knowledge from 1991 to 2016, and observed an increase in the number of publications throughout the years. Most articles were associated with Brazilian institutions (58%), followed by those with collaboration between Brazilian and international institutions (33%), and those published by authors exclusively from international...

Vascular flora of the cerrado of Bauru-SP Biota Neotropica
Cavassan,Osmar; Weiser,Veridiana de Lara.
Information on the cerrado vascular flora of the municipality of Bauru has been provided in lists of floristic surveys carried out in fragments of this vegetation type at different times, applying different criteria, and conforming to current taxonomic classifications. We organized this information according to APG III and revised synonymies, aiming at producing a single floristic list of species occurring in cerrado sensu lato or ecotonal areas (transitions between cerrado and seasonal forest) in municipality of Bauru to inform conservation proposals. For this purpose, we referred to all floristic lists of vascular plants found in cerrado fragments in Bauru and to botanic material collected and deposited in the herbaria of the Department of Biological...

Veredas and their use by birds in the Cerrado, South America: a review Biota Neotropica
Tubelis,Dárius Pukenis.
In the Cerrado, veredas are linear physiognomies that occur on hydromorphic soil usually along narrow water courses. They often growth on flat terrain or near headwaters. They are characterised by the abundance of buriti palms (Mauritia flexuosa) that growth over other trees, numerous shrubs and a dense herbaceous stratum. Despite being common landscape elements through the Cerrado's extension, the use of veredas by birds has not been examined in detail. This study aimed to review studies of birds and veredas in the Cerrado. Publications (n = 25) reported the use of veredas by 261 bird species. Only 13 of them had aspects of their biology (reproduction and feeding) studied in detail. Veredas are poorly used by Cerrado's endemic species, but are the major...

Vertical and horizontal distribution of pollination systems in cerrado fragments of central Brazil BABT
Martins,Fernanda Quintas; Batalha,Marco Antônio.
In fragments of the cerrado, we determined the frequency of pollination systems and analyzed their spatial distribution. We placed 38 transects, sampling 2,280 individuals and 121 species. As expected in Neotropical regions, bee-pollination was the most frequent pollination system. We found a decrease in the frequency of plants pollinated by beetles towards the fragment interior. Similarly, we found significant variation in relation to height just for the bats; there was an increase in the frequency of plants pollinated by bats towards the higher heights. In general, we found no horizontal and vertical variation in the pollination systems, probably as consequence of the more open physiognomy of the cerrado vegetation.

Water relations and hydraulic architecture in Cerrado trees: adjustments to seasonal changes in water availability and evaporative demand Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Bucci,Sandra J.; Scholz,Fabian G.; Goldstein,Guillermo; Meinzer,Frederick C.; Franco,Augusto C.; Zhang,Yongjiang; Hao,Guang-You.
We determined adjustments in physiology and morphology that allow Neotropical savanna trees from central Brazil (Cerrado) to avoid water deficits and to maintain a nearly constant internal water balance despite seasonal changes in precipitation and air saturation deficit (D). Precipitation in the study area is highly seasonal with about five nearly rainless months during which D is two fold higher compared to wet season values. As a consequence of the seasonal fluctuations in rainfall and D, soil water potential changes substantially in the upper 100 cm of soil, but remains nearly constant below 2 m depth. Hydraulic architecture and water relations traits of Cerrado trees adjusted during the dry season to prevent increasing water deficits and insure...

Woody community dynamics in two fragments of "cerrado" stricto sensu over a seven-year period (1995-2002), MA, Brazil Rev. Bras. Bot.
Aquino,Fabiana de Gois; Walter,Bruno Machado Teles; Ribeiro,José Felipe.
This study was conducted in two fragments of "cerrado" stricto sensu in the Gerais de Balsas Colonization Project, located in southern Maranhão, Brazil. The objective was to evaluate the dynamics of the woody plant community, over seven years (1995-2002). Four transects of 160 × 20 m were monitored. All woody plants with a stem diameter > 3 cm, at 0.30 m above ground level, were recorded. In 1995, 983 and 1,177 stems were sampled in fragments 1 and 2, respectively; in 2002, 1057 and 1406 stems were sampled in the same fragments. In 1995, the Shannon diversity indices (H') were 3.07 and 3.33, in fragments 1 and 2, respectively, reaching their maximum value in 2002 of 3.11 and 3.35. The community of fragment 1 showed an increase of 7.5% in density and...

Woody vegetation dynamics in a floodplain campo de murundus in central Brazil Acta Botanica
Pinto,José Roberto Rodrigues; Mews,Henrique Augusto; Jancoski,Halina Soares; Marimon,Beatriz Schwantes; Bomfim,Bárbara de Oliveira.
Campos de murundus (grasslands dotted with knolls that are covered with savanna-like woody vegetation) are a common landscape in central Brazil. In this study, we assessed for the first time the dynamics of the vegetation in a floodplain campo de murundus, describing changes in composition and structure of the woody vegetation. In 2005, we established 16 permanent 25 × 25 m plots, where we identified and mapped individuals with a trunk diameter at the base ≥ 2.86 cm, as well as measuring the height of those individuals. In 2008 (after two fire events), we resampled the plots. In 2005, we had registered 4.54 m² ha-1 of basal area, 430 individuals, 42 species, 36 genera and 24 families. In 2008, we found an increase in basal area (to 4.65 m² ha-1) and a...
